Remote Online Boxing Lesson

Hinnerup Karate in Denmark booked me for an end of year remote Remote Online Boxing Lesson. I am training their teachers to teach the fundamentals of Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai to their students as part of their cross-training curriculum.

This morning we looked at creating angles and working out of corners.

Remote Learning: Hinnerup Karate in Denmark hosts an end-of-year online boxing lesson. Teachers are trained in boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai to enhance their cross-training curriculum.

Warm-up

Our sport-specific warm-up consisted of some muscle activation and dynamic stretches followed by footwork shadow boxing. We reviewed slipping when moving into range, moving laterally out of range, using the shoulder as a shield and dropping the chin. This was followed some partner drilling, where the pivot step was introduced.

Jabbing Machine

One boxer threw continuous jabs on the spot whilst their partner slipped their way in and laterally moved out or angled off.

Pivot Sparring

One boxer fought only in a straight line whilst their opponent was only permitted to move off the line and counter. This introduced opportunities for angling and forced the pivot-step.

Cornering

This section provided the bulk of the lesson. We used the following progressive live, sparring games:

Corner Chasing

This game consisted of one of boxer trying to corner their opponent by only using footwork and their opponent also using footwork to escape. No punches were permitted.

Corner Chasing with Tag

The cornering boxer is now allowed to make contact with their opponent. They must use their right hand to prevent the opponent from escaping on that side, and similarly use their left hand for the other side.

Cornering with Hooks and Straight Punches

The cornering boxer was first permitted to only use left hooks and right straights and then, later, jabs and right hooks.

Countering out of the Corner

With the cornering boxer only permitted to throw jabs and crosses, the cornered fighter was told to explore circular punches. These were then restricted to uppercuts.

The Corner Game

The full corner games permits all punches. However, the movement rules and stricter. The cornered opponent can only win if they land a clean punch on their opponent and leave their allocated space without receiving a clean hit.

Focus Mitt Work

We will look more at developing these techniques on the focus mitts in future classes. However, this morning we narrowed our attention to the hook/cross combination. These were trained in the corner with the boxer delivering shots to a coach pivoting out of said corner. We finished the session with a speed development exercise of jab/cross/hook/cross/hook with the boxer's elbows pinned to their sides, forcing them to move their body better and to lead with their hands. With the restrictions lifted the same combination was performed with full power.
