Mixed Martial Arts Personal Training
When my couple clients returned for their third hour of Mixed Martial Arts Personal Training, we focused on a critical but often challenging position: the half-guard. This lesson built on their previous session, where we explored half-guard fundamentals on open ground. This time, we took it to the wall, or cage, to simulate real fight conditions where movement is limited. The goal was to sharpen their ability to defend and attack from half-guard when space is tight and options narrow.

Understanding the Half-Guard Position at the Wall
The half-guard is a versatile position in MMA grappling. It occurs when the bottom fighter controls one of the top fighter’s legs with their own legs, limiting the top fighter’s mobility. At the wall, this position becomes even more complex because the cage restricts lateral movement and escape routes.
In this session, the top fighter aimed to either pass the guard, submit the bottom fighter, or land five controlled strikes to the head without interruption. The bottom fighter focused on defending these attacks while looking for opportunities to sweep, submit or escape.
Training at the cage wall forces fighters to adapt their techniques. For example, the top fighter cannot simply circle away to pass guard. Instead, they must use pressure, leverage, and precise timing to break through. The bottom fighter must use the wall to their advantage, leveraging it to create space or trap the opponent.
Specific Sparring Rounds to Build Real-World Skills
To simulate fight conditions, I designed sparring rounds with clear objectives and restrictions:
Top fighter: Pass the half-guard, submit, or land five uninterrupted strikes to the head.
Bottom fighter: Defend strikes, maintain half-guard control, and attempt sweeps or escapes.
Each round lasted a few minutes, with close monitoring to ensure safety. Between rounds, we paused to analyze what worked and what didn’t. This immediate feedback loop is one of the biggest benefits of Mixed Martial Arts Personal Training. It allows clients to address problems as they arise, making corrections before bad habits form.
For example, one client struggled to maintain control when the top fighter applied heavy pressure against the cage. We broke down the mechanics of framing with the arms and using the hips to create space. After practising these adjustments, the client showed noticeable improvement in the next round.
Key Techniques Practised in This Session
Here are some of the essential techniques we focused on during the lesson:
Wall half-guard defence
Using the cage to block the top fighter’s attempts to pass by anchoring the hips and framing with the arms.
Controlled ground and pound
The top fighter learned to deliver strikes with control, aiming to score points without losing position or exposing themselves to counters.
Guard passing with pressure
Techniques to slowly work around the half-guard while maintaining balance and avoiding submissions.
Submission setups from half-guard
Exploring chokes and joint locks that become available when the opponent commits to passing or striking.
Escape and sweep drills
Bottom fighter drills to reverse the position or create enough space to stand up.
Why Private Training Enhances Learning
Mixed Martial Arts Personal Training offers a unique advantage over group classes. The focused attention allows me to tailor drills and feedback to each client’s strengths and weaknesses.
During this session, the couple could ask questions and immediately apply corrections. This hands-on approach accelerates skill development and builds confidence in applying techniques under pressure.
Safety and Fun Go Hand in Hand
While the session was intense, safety was always the priority. Controlled striking and monitored sparring ensured that both clients could push their limits without risking injury. The atmosphere remained positive and encouraging, which helps maintain motivation and enjoyment.
