  • Post with your arm: To cover for counters, begin to generate rotational force, establish balance, set a datum and distract your opponent.

  • Stationary Foot Position: Raise your heel off the ground and rotate through the entire 180 degrees.

  • Kicking Foot Position: Point your toes and strike with the shin, not the foot. This reduces injury risk and increases impact.

  • Balance and Posture: Keep your upper body upright and your supporting foot firmly planted, pivoting on the ball of the foot for smooth rotation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid


  • Kicking too low or too high without control.

  • Practise the foot switch slowly at first to build muscle memory. Begin with spot kick and then step kick before switch kick.

  • Switch kick is a little more subtle than just switching stances. You kick as your feet change positions.

  • Keep your guard up to protect yourself during the switch.

  • Focus on speed and fluidity rather than just power.

  • Use shadowboxing or remote online martial arts training drills to rehearse the movement.
