My junior mixed martial arts lesson looked at attacking and defending the turtle position. My senior mixed martial arts lesson consisted of cumulative sparring.
The junior lesson begun with dynamic stretches and the new muscle activation flow drill. We then looked at five ways to attack and two ways to defend from the turtle position with mixed martial arts. Due to the presence of the striking attacks and defences are more direct and simplistic. However, they also require a good degree of coordination. For example, the striking attacks must be delivered from a solid ground-fighting base with the fighter ensuring they are pinning down the turtling opponent. The partner playing the role of the opponent needed to respond by covering and moving, prompting the fighter to move from side to side keeping the hips low.
Attack 1 - Punches and hammer strikes to the ribs and side of the head.
Attack 2 - Elbow strikes to the same targets.
Attack 3 - Knee strikes to the ribs (head, when grounded, is no longer permitted in mainstream MMA). No 6-12 elbow strikes permitted.
Attack 4 - Soccer kicks to the ribs (head, when grounded, is no longer permitted in mainstream MMA).
Attack 5 - All of the above whilst posting off the head.
Extra Notes:
The turtle is not a efficient position to carry over into self-defence training nor are the attacks.
When it comes to delivering elbow strikes, chopping, spear and sideways strikes are the most effective.
Hooks are really the main punches to throw along with hammer strikes.
Only the spear knee is worth using in the grounded position. This is particularly effective when delivered from a side control position, allowing the striking leg to be fully extended for maximum force.
Senior class was all sparring but used amateur boxing rounds for better focus and intensity. The cumulative sparring rounds were as follows:
MMA boxing (MMA gloves).
Shoot boxing (punching and stand-up grappling/clinch).
MMA kickboxing.
Shoot kickboxing (unlike muay Thai, this round allows for all throws and takedowns found in wrestling).
