Move to fight; fight to move (diary entry)

12.03.12

Today, we got down to the business of fighting. There was no pretense about anything else. If you look at Iain Abernethy's excellent "Martial Map" you will see that one of the three circles of his ven diagram is classified as fighting. It has overlap into both martial arts and self-protection, but it also has its own space of unrelated and distilled fighting. Tonight we were straight in there and it can be quite a liberating feeling. No philosophy and no soft skills, just good honest combat for combat's sake.

So we began with a warm-up of improvised shadow boxing, moving through all the different ranges as we got warmer. This was then immediately followed by 30% sparring. We began with some ground grappling. This was followed by some stand-up grip fighting. We then moved onto some light contact striking - kicks and open hand strikes (no head contact).

Everyone then donned sparring kit for some combination work. We worked off a simple boxing combination that linked up with the ground 'n pound combination. This began with three defences against jab/cross/hook - parry/parry/block, parry/parry/roll and slip/slip/roll. We then brought in a round kick at the end of the punching combination and followed that with a leg grab/takedown counter. This was followed with a counter to the take down with a submission from guard and then an alternative where the person doing the take down performed the ground 'n pound combination.

The class finished with six rounds of MMA sparring, then a shadow boxing/specific exercise technique warm-down and some stretching.
