My teacher training sessions with Athena School of Karate resumed with our work in Muay Thai styles. This morning I began a more live-based approach that my client can take back to her classes and better integrate into the classes she teaches. We looked at some external objectives of the muay bouk fighter (overall aggressive fighter, seeking the inside range and comparable to the swarmer in Boxing) and the muay khao (knee fighter). We managed this with some layered live training.

Low protection free-flow free sparring - This encourages more technical work and control, whilst constantly attacking and defending.
Foot-treading sparring - The objective is for one person to step on the other person's feet. This is to encourage moving forward and into an opponent's space
Mirror foot-treading sparring - The fighter is now restricted to only using their lead foot to tread on their opponent's rear and their rear foot to tread on their opponent's lead.
Lead foot to rear foot only sparring - This restriction moulds a fighter to better secure the inside range
Collar tie with the above - Now the fighter can better secure their entry
Collar tie only sparring - With the foot-treading now removed, the nak muay now looks to enter as a single unit but with good forward footwork
Collar tie and knee strike sparring
Above with other strikes
Above with the opponent also striking - one seeks the clinch and the other seeks to prevent the clinch.
This is an uncooperative series of asymmetrical games. The opponent uses evasive footwork, posts and breaks the opponent's posture, and looks for openings for strikes.
