08.09.18 This morning my client reached his final lesson of a 10 hour course on MMA ground-fighting. He made the decision to continue his training next time with a course on comprehensive MMA. We focused on the oma plata to complete our basic series on submissions from the guard, but the main area of training was blending punching with all guard positions and submissions. We warmed up using the progressive fighting system. This is where light sparring starts from cold. Both training partners go in very light, slowly increasing their resistance until it becomes full-blown sparring. Such a method takes patience and trust with a partner. We trained it from all three guard ranges – closed, mid and long. We revisited each range with increased levels of resistance. The arm-bar and the triangle choke from the closed guard were drilled in speed/muscle memory repetitions. The oma plata was then broken down as taught as a technique. Next the four-punch combination was taught from each of three guard ranges as well as snaking forwards and backwards. The last exercise is crucial to teach coordinating punching whilst moving from underneath. We used the punching combination to set up the arm-bar, the triangle choke and the oma plata. Looping punches were then employed to set up the Kimura submission and sweep. Uppercuts were used to attain a under hooks from butterfly guard and we also looked at getting the arm-drag amidst throwing punches from this guard. The lesson finished with a round of specific sparring from the guard.
