Tonight my client from Hostlebro Taekwondo Klub, Denmark was accompanied by his assistant instructor and we continued our remote personal training. We are focusing on the basics of boxing and looked at exclusively at defending and attacking with straight punches.
Remote Online Personal Training
My concept with these two practitioner clients, who are both highly experienced taekwondo teachers, is teach them boxing by building their skills from the ground up using a series of exercises. These exercises can then by taught directly to their taekwondo student as part of their cross-training programme. I have worked with Hostlebro Taekwondo Klub since 2020.
After a sport-specific muscle activation and dynamic stretch warm-up, we moved into some drills to better promote effective defence and movement.
Jabbing machine - one boxer jabs whilst the other slips to the outside or slips to the inside and covers the opponent's rear hand.
Pendulum footwork - jab forward/cross backward vs the reverse, then change roles
Hold a small object under chin whilst evading straight punches - encourages safer head position if punched.
Hold a piece of paper in one's mouth whilst training partner attempts to snatch it - encourages faster evasive head movement and faster jabbing
Attack versus defence sparring - slipping only
Attack versus defence sparring - catching
Attack versus defence sparring - parrying
Attack versus defence sparring - blocking
Attack versus defence sparring - cover
Hold centre position whilst opponent has to move in and out during sparring - brings together footwork, head movement and defence.
