26.05.20 Tuesday night’s Skype live video training brought my teacher training back into the realm of Dirty Boxing but now with the hindsight of Muay Thai/Dutch Kickboxing. Much of the work was focused on moving the fight towards a wall and using the shoulder bump. The warm-up consisted of footwork partner-work which we moved into cornering and escape drills. This is relevant material teaching how to push an opponent into a wall and also how to evade being cornered in such a way. Our first focus mitt exercises integrated the shoulder bump into different combinations. We set the bump up from the stand-up range with the basic jab/cross/hook combination. The hook should put the shoulder into position for the shoulder bump. Getting the range positioning is essential using a tight hook. The shoulder bump should also be hidden and flow from the hook. This action creates some distance and unbalances the opponent. Typically we chain on two more punches, such as cross/hook. We also switched levels with a low kick and a hook. All low round kicks are good choices, but we used the calf kick and the Dutch kick. The Dutch kick was also a good partner to a liver shot. All these techniques coupled with good angular footwork are great for cutting off the fight area and driving the opponent into the wall. They were also exchanged for a Thai clinch and knee attack, using the lead collar tie as a means for delivering a spear elbow strike. We then went all-in the clinch and began exploring under-hooks. After some pummelling, my two clients began layering in shoulder bumps. The under-hook is an excellent tool for executing this particular technique from the clinch. We also drilled angular punches in the body clinch. This particular drill involves punching from the over-hook whilst securing an under-hook for positional control. The feeder partner then counters with a block to the striking arm’s bicep. The working partner responds with an under-hook as the feeder re-pummels and the drill continues. Therefore, the active partner executes an under-hook/shoulder bump/over-hook/angular punch and then counters to a bicep block with the same combination on the other side.
