Training in Motion (diary)

Rather than revise techniques, we trained in motion. Most of the learning was done through progressively more resistant sparring to explore areas that needed improving. This is in a similar vein, but different to progressive specific sparring. In specific sparring you isolate a certain tactic or technique and then progressively put it under pressure moving from a type of freestyle compliant drill to a fully resistant form of sparring. The sparring is restricted to train, reinforce and test a certain action or behaviour. Explorative sparring is when a coach checks a student each time a certain tactic fails them. The tactic is then dissected and corrected. We worked with the two areas of symmetrical sport ground fighting: fighting from the top and underneath. When fighting from the top we looked at better posturing, dropping the hips and applying better movement to pass guard. We also focused on stacking an opponent when going under the guard and using a half-guard tactic when attacking the turtle position . When fighting from underneath we looked at recovery with the closed guard and better control from a long range guard – remembering to keep a minimum  of three points covered on an opponent.
