Under-hooks and Footwork (diary entry)

We resumed our work on the clinch again, which I feel is the weakest point in the class. Following on from discussions I had with my judo player client in my recent private lesson, we looked at the importance of adapting grips. Also, after being questioned about a certain footwork drill, we looked at the importance of entering a hip throw.

The hip throw section included three variations in the adapted judo series of throws: the large hip throw, spring hip throw and the cross buttocks throw. The last of the three was a popular throwing technique in the days of 19th century pugilism and we use it as an extension to the head lock takedown when attacking the highline. Looking at the twisting momentum and the double under-hook, we moved onto the belly-to-belly suplex.

Sparring began from under-hook pummelling exercises and went into sparring and then back to the exercise. This kept fighters in the fluid mind-set of attacking and defending positions in the clinch and also gave them a narrow window to fight when suddenly placed under pressure.
