The sixth session of my client's extended MMA Personal Training course (10 sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours) continued to concentrate on ground 'n pound techniques. Our emphasis this time was on fighting from or against a downed position. We mainly focused on a tactic of accessing and utilising the the half-guard.
Submission Grappling - Standing Versus Open Guard (MMA Personal Training)
Our first two rounds of sparring, as per usual, were 5-minute Submission Grappling without grappling. These are ideal for warming up the scaffolding of any form of ground fighting. The rounds were restricted to fighting from an asymmetrical fight situation with one fighter standing and the other holding an open guard. Objectives were to sweep, submit or stand from the ground, and pass, submit or squash from the standing top position.
MMA - Half-Guard Versus Standing (MMA Personal Training)
The next six rounds were 3-minute MMA ground fighting. A standing fighter aimed to score five uninterrupted strikes to the opponent's head, pass guard, submit or squash the opponent. In round three and four, the grounded opponent sought the half-guard position. In rounds five, six, seven and eight, he began in the half-guard and looked to either stand or their opponent down.
Technical (MMA Personal Training)
I noticed my client getting double reverse under-hooks when sprawling. This is a position very vulnerable to the sit-out and pin counter. We worked through using the reverse arm-triangle hold positioning as a more effective alternative.
The lesson finished with our usual warm-down of stretches and isometric strengthening exercises.
