The final hour of my client's 10-hour Kickboxing course focused on handling southpaws. We used the strategy of keeping the lead foot on the outside and leading with rear hand. The proximity to an opponent offered by this position allows for faster delivery of teeps and rear hand straights. Meanwhile, the outside techniques have to be adapted to up-jabs, question mark uppercuts, hooks, lead over hands and outside round kicks.
Our specific 3-minute sparring rounds consisted of me taking the role of a southpaw kickboxer against my client.
Round 1: We just simply worked to dominate from the outside foot position described in the opening paragraph.
Round 2: Rear straights versus defence only
Round 3: Defence only versus rear straights
Round 4: Rear straights only sparring
Round 5: Rear straights and lead hand punches versus defence only
Round 6: Defence only versus rear straights and lead hand punches
Round 7: Rear straights and lead hand punches only sparring
Round 8: Rear teeps versus defence only
Round 9: Defence only versus rear teeps
Round 10: Orthodox versus southpaw free sparring
The lesson finished with static and PNF stretching.
