What better way to finish my client's 10-hour course in Muay Thai and this year's personal training than with a throwing of the die game. If you are a regular reader of my blog lesson reports, you will be aware that my most experienced client has used this method over several lessons. This was also part of my recent Kickboxing workshop. The concept is to roll a die or dice through a phone app in secret and then match up the number you have thrown with the corresponding numbered technique or strategy. All rounds are fought under full Thai rules (but no knees to the head) and very light contact.
Tonight we used the basic die list:
1 for punches
2 for body kicks
3 for elbows
4 for knees
5 for leg kicks
6 for countering
The challenge is to work out your opponent's number so they cannot score while scoring with your numbered techniques or strategy. For example, you might land on a 5 and will need to use any of your other techniques as supporting moves to set up low kicks. In this instance, strong boxing combinations or feigning body kicks can be great ways to open up the leg targets. However, it's also worth bearing in mind that not knowing or guessing another person's number wrongly can lead to allowing them more opportunities. For example, you might roll a 3 and decide that clinching is your best bet to land elbow strikes. However, if your opponent has rolled a 4, this approach can leave you vulnerable to knees. Similarly, they might have rolled a 6 and now have ample opportunities to counter you, whereas this might not have been quite so easy had you decided to work from the outside.
My client is following the standard MMA cross-training path. He began with 10 lessons of boxing, then 10 lessons of kickboxing, and now, having finished Muay Thai, will move on to wrestling/clinch in the new year.
