28.09.16 My second lesson of the nig

ht was my client’s sixth lesson on Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training (the eighth of a 10-part course). We focused on developing speed and power in kicks.
The lesson began with some simple target work on the body. We exchanged one-for-one teeps and round kicks as well as shin-checks. Emphasis was placed on coordinating the upper body momentum whilst driving the force of kicks from the ground. We looked at posture, positioning and relaxing into the kicks. We covered low, mid and high round kicks as well as 45 degree and Dutch variations (see previous diary entry).
We also tried various different set-ups for the kicks on the Thai focus mitts:
Jab/rear round kick, jab/cross/lead round kick to develop boxing combinations using both sides equally
Jab/rear round kick/lead round kick/cross to develop speed whilst travelling with kicks
Jab/lead teep to develop the seesaw feel with minimal delay between punches and kicks on the same side
Double jab/lead round kick/cross as hybrid of the approaches to combinations
The session was finished with some tactical work. We looked at setting up Thai boxers for various attacks, including doubling up and feigning with round kicks.
