On the 13th February 2026 my client from Cotswold Karate continued his Martial Arts Teacher Training course on isolating and integrating elbow strikes via Muay Thai.

This course will have covered the following:

  • Isolating the major and some of the minor elbow strikes from muay Thai.

  • Integrating these elbow strikes with all of the other tools of the combat sport.

  • Cross-training benefits, which will be used for attribute training for my client's karate school

  • Pitting elbow strikes against each other in isolated, specific sparring

  • Specific sparring allowing training and elbow strikes

  • Specific sparring allowing boxing against and with elbow strikes

  • Specific sparring within the clinch using elbows strikes

  • Drilling defences against kicks with elbow strike counters

  • Specific sparring, pitting elbow strikes against kicks

Training in this the eighth lesson of the course was divided into two sections of specific sparring:

Section One

Boxing with elbow strikes, particularly while utilising full face head guards, presents a unique and dynamic approach to striking that enhances both offensive and defensive capabilities. In these specific sparring rounds, we focused on working from the outside, which allowed us to blend traditional punches seamlessly with a variety of elbow strikes. This integration of techniques not only made the transitions between strikes smoother but also provided a more comprehensive understanding of how to engage an opponent effectively.

One of the key advantages of this method is that it made moving into striking range significantly easier compared to our previous lesson, where we isolated elbow strikes solely from the outside. In isolation, the complexity of executing effective elbow strikes without the aid of other techniques was quite pronounced. However, by incorporating punches as a means to set up our elbow strikes, we found that we could create openings and manipulate our opponent's guard more effectively.

As we progressed through the sparring, it became evident that while the combination of punches and elbows facilitated entry into striking range, it also underscored the ongoing challenge of landing strikes without resorting to trapping and clinching techniques. The need to maintain distance while simultaneously trying to land effective strikes required a heightened level of awareness and timing. We learned that utilizing punches not only served as a means of distraction but also helped establish datums—points of reference that guided our elbow strikes. This strategic use of punches allowed us to gauge our opponent's movement and anticipate their reactions, thereby increasing our chances of successfully landing elbow strikes.

Throughout the session, we practiced various angles and trajectories for elbow strikes, experimenting with different combinations that flowed naturally from our punches. This not only improved our fluidity but also enhanced our ability to adapt to the opponent's defensive maneuvers. The full face head guards provided an added layer of safety, allowing us to engage more freely and focus on refining our technique without the immediate concern of injury.

In summary, the integration of elbow strikes within boxing, especially when supported by full face head guards, opens up a myriad of tactical possibilities. This lesson emphasised the importance of blending techniques, the strategic use of punches to set up elbow strikes, and the necessity of developing the skills to land effective strikes while maintaining control of the fight. As we continue to refine these skills, the insights gained from this session will undoubtedly enhance our overall performance in both training and competitive scenarios.

Section Two

Specific sparring restricting techniques to elbow strikes within the clinch and permitting sweeps demonstrated the prime range for elbows, highlighting the importance of close-quarter combat in Muay Thai.

This focused approach allowed us to explore the unique dynamics of elbow strikes, which are particularly effective when the opponents are in close proximity. By limiting our sparring to these specific techniques, we could hone our skills and understand the nuances involved in executing elbow strikes with precision and power.

We wore boxing gloves, which not only kept the Muay Thai theme intact but also served to protect our hands and reduce the risk of injury during the training sessions. The use of gloves also imposed certain restrictions on grappling, ensuring that our focus remained primarily on striking techniques rather than engaging in prolonged clinch exchanges. Nevertheless, the elbows truly came into their own once we were able to stay within this close range, where the potential for devastating strikes is maximised. The positioning of our bodies and the angles at which we delivered our elbow strikes became crucial factors in determining the effectiveness of our techniques. The ability to generate power from short distances, combined with the element of surprise, made the elbow strikes particularly lethal in this sparring context.

Full face headguards were also retained from the previous rounds of specific sparring, providing an additional layer of safety while allowing us to experiment with different angles and trajectories of our elbow strikes. This protective gear enabled us to engage in more intense exchanges without the fear of injury, fostering an environment conducive to learning and skill development. Overall, this structured approach to sparring not only reinforced our understanding of the tactical applications of elbow strikes within the clinch but also emphasised the significance of maintaining control and awareness during close-range combat scenarios. By concentrating on these specific techniques, we were able to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the art of Muay Thai and the effectiveness of its striking arsenal.
