Have you ever thought about how fun and effective training can be when combined with a game? In my recent 1.5-hour Muay Thai personal training session with a longtime client, we explored the innovative "dice method" for training. This approach adds an exciting twist to our workouts and challenges us to think strategically about techniques and scoring. As we progressed through our training, I was reminded how essential creativity is for developing skills in martial arts.


The dice method has become a staple in our training routine, and this session marked the third time we used it. Each time, we’ve increased the complexity of our combinations, making training more engaging and productive. In this post, I will share insights from our latest lesson, focusing on how we used three dice to create 16 possible combinations. This method not only fosters a deeper understanding of Muay Thai techniques but also keeps each session fresh.


The Dice Method Explained (Muay Thai Personal Training)


The dice method is a unique training tool I introduced to my client to make our Muay Thai personal training sessions more dynamic. In our first session, we used a single die that allowed us to explore basic combinations. In the second session, we graduated to two dice, which doubled our potential combinations. This time, we took it a step further by incorporating three dice, leading to 16 unique combinations.


Each combination links to specific techniques or objectives that we must execute during sparring. A key twist is that neither my client nor I can disclose our rolled combinations to each other. This opens up a new level of excitement, as we must focus not only on our techniques but also on guessing what our opponent might be trying to score.


Building Combinations and Strategies (Muay Thai Personal Training)


The moment we rolled the dice, I could see the excitement in my client's eyes. The surprise of what combination would be assigned made our training instantly engaging. Each set of combinations was carefully crafted, including a mix of strikes, clinches, and defensive maneuvers. By using techniques such as the round kick, elbow strike, and catch-and-counter, we ensured that our training involved a broad spectrum of skills.


The challenge lies in the rule that while we can use any legal Muay Thai technique, we can only score points with our designated combinations. For instance, if I rolled and got a combination that involved a jab, knee strike, and sweep, I needed to choose when to use these correctly. This requirement forces us to think critically about our movements and anticipate the other’s actions. It becomes a game of strategy, where we not only conceal our intentions but also strive to decipher the moves of our opponent.

Our sparring sessions had an exhilarating atmosphere. Each round was filled with intense energy as we engaged in strategic exchanges. My client was not only honing their assigned techniques but also sharpening their ability to read my movements. The Importance of Stretching


After an intense sparring session, we concluded with our usual PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching and static stretching. Stretching is essential in any training regimen, particularly in a demanding sport like Muay Thai. It can improve flexibility by 20%, reduce injury risks, and aid recovery, making it a crucial aspect of our routine.


Incorporating PNF stretching has proven beneficial for my client. This technique engages both stretching and contracting of the targeted muscles, enhancing flexibility more effectively than static stretching alone. When going through our stretching routine, I emphasize the importance of recovery and maintaining a balanced approach to training. This ensures that my client remains in peak condition for each session.
