12.08.17 Today we began my client’s 10 hour course on basic wrestling for martial arts cross-training. This is an eclectic course, combining aspects of non-jacketed stand-up grappling combat sports. We focus on the clinch range of MMA without striking – grips, takedowns and takedown defence. Pinning, although covered, is left more to the groundwork/submission grappling course. We began with a footwork warm-up. This included lateral movement with a low stance and backwards running, which can help develop lowline takedown defence. Next we moved onto mobility exercises and specific callisthenic movements, such as the Indian press-up for the sprawl. We then moved on forward, shoulder, backward and backward shoulder rolls, which progressed onto basic front and back breakfalls. Some of this warm-up will be compressed and some it will be layered in successive sessions. Stand-up grappling requires a good solid base of strength and conditioning. Next we looked at grips. This began with the execution of the necktie, single grip to the back of the head and neck. We looked at weight distribution, angulation and balance points with this single hold. This was then brought into the collar and elbow tie-up or neutral position, where we began some “bulling”. This exercise promotes a smooth transition of controlling the head and one arm. It is combined with footwork for the fighter to understand how to dominate and unbalance an opponent even from a neutral position. From here we looked at wrist grips, both establishing them and breaking them. This brought us onto arm-drags and taking the back, as well as countering this move. This was then trained in a typical drill. We also covered the two-on-one attack and counter for the arm. The mid-line range was finished with under-hooks and over-hooks, moving onto a pummelling exercise.
