Tonight, I switched things up with my veteran private client during his usual Muay Thai personal training session. Instead of our typical sparring-focused workout, we dedicated the entire 1.5-hour class to pad work. This change allowed us to concentrate on technique, precision and conditioning through a structured series of rounds using focus mitts and Thai pads.

These rounds emphasised punches, footwork, and head movement. We worked on combinations like jab-cross-hook and defensive slips. The goal was to sharpen hand speed and accuracy while maintaining good balance.
Rounds 5-8: Kickboxing focus
Here, we integrated kicks with punches, practising combinations such as jab-cross-roundhouse kick and teep (push kick) setups. This phase helped improve timing and coordination between upper and lower body strikes.
Rounds 9-10: Knees and elbows
These rounds focused on close-range strikes, essential for clinch work and infighting. We drilled knee strikes to the body and elbows to the head, emphasising power and precision.
Rounds 11-12: Everything combined
The final rounds mixed all techniques, simulating realistic fight scenarios. This helped my client practise fluid transitions between punches, kicks, knees and elbows under fatigue.
This progression allowed us to build intensity gradually and focus on specific skills without overwhelming the client.

Accuracy and form matter more than hitting hard. Power comes naturally with good technique.
Communicate with your trainer
Let them know which areas you want to improve or if you feel any discomfort.
Breathe and stay relaxed
Tension wastes energy and slows you down. Controlled breathing helps maintain stamina.
Visualize an opponent
Treat the pads as if they were a real person to improve timing and reaction.
Use all rounds wisely
Break down your session into phases like we did: start with basics, then add complexity.
Finishing Strong with PNF Stretching and Release
After the pad work, we ended the session with PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching and muscle release techniques. This warm-down helps:
Improve flexibility
Reduce muscle soreness
Enhance recovery
Prevent injuries
PNF stretching involves contracting and relaxing muscles to increase range of motion. It’s an excellent complement to intense Muay Thai personal training sessions, especially after demanding pad work.
