Tonight’s Muay Thai personal training session brought back a familiar and exciting challenge: the dice game. If you haven’t encountered this before, it’s a simple yet effective way to sharpen focus, strategy, and technique during sparring. Instead of rolling a single die to determine a random number, we assign each number to a specific technique. The twist? You keep your roll secret while trying to score points only with the technique you rolled. Meanwhile, your opponent tries to guess your technique while protecting their own secret. This game adds a mental layer to physical training, making every round unpredictable and engaging.

How the Dice Game Works in Training
The dice game is straightforward but demands sharp attention and adaptability. Here’s how we set it up tonight:
Counters
Kicks to the head and body
Knee strikes
Elbows
Sweeps
Lead side techniques
Each number on the die corresponds to one of these categories. During the sparring rounds, only the technique you rolled scores points. You can use other techniques freely, but they won’t add to your score. This forces you to focus on your assigned technique while reading your opponent’s moves and guessing their secret.
We ran 12 rounds, each lasting 3 minutes. This format keeps intensity high and allows for plenty of practice with different techniques. The game encourages creativity and sharpens your ability to switch tactics quickly.
Why This Game Works for New Muay Thai Students
For new private clients, especially those learning Muay Thai one-on-one, this game offers several benefits:
Focus on specific techniques
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the many moves in Muay Thai. The dice game narrows your focus, helping you master one technique at a time.
Improves strategic thinking
You must guess your opponent’s technique while hiding your own. This mental challenge builds fight IQ and awareness.
Encourages adaptability
Since you can use other techniques but only score with one, you learn to mix up your style and keep your opponent guessing.
Makes training fun and engaging
Sparring can sometimes feel repetitive. The dice game adds variety and excitement, keeping motivation high.
Strengthening Hamstrings with Nordic Curls
After the sparring rounds, we shifted focus to injury prevention and strength building. Hamstring injuries are common in martial arts, especially for clients in their 50s who also run long distances. To protect against this, we included a Nordic curl routine.
The session included 100 repetitions divided into 10 sets, featuring:
Bent-over weighted curls
Negative Nordic curls
Partial Nordic curls
Pulsing Nordic curls
This variety targets the hamstrings from different angles and intensities. Nordic curls are excellent for building eccentric strength, which helps muscles resist tears during explosive movements like kicks and sweeps.
Mobility and Flexibility with PNF Stretching
We wrapped up the session with a full PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching routine. This method combines stretching and isometric contractions to improve flexibility and strength simultaneously.
The routine included:
Isometric strengthening exercises
Lower body mobility drills
Upper body mobility drills
Special focus on hip strength and mobility
Improving hip mobility is crucial for Muay Thai practitioners. It enhances kicking range, balance, and power. The isometric exercises also help build joint stability, reducing injury risk.
Why This Approach Benefits Muay Thai Personal Training Clients
Combining the dice game with targeted strength and mobility work creates a well-rounded training session. For new private clients, this approach offers:
Skill development through focused sparring
Injury prevention with strength exercises
Improved flexibility and joint health
A fun and mentally engaging training environment
This balance helps clients progress safely and enjoyably, building confidence and competence in Muay Thai.
