My new client began his first Boxing course with me. He has decided to pursue the full Mixed Martial Arts route - 10 hours Boxing, 10 hours Kickboxing, 10 hours Muay Thai, 10 hours Wrestling, 20 hours Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting and 10 hours Mixed Martial Arts. He has had some prior experience with Boxercise (trained by genuine Boxing coaches) and Kickboxing, and is in his mid-30s.
After a warm-up of dynamic stretching and muscle activation, we began with five minutes heavy bag assessment. I was able to see how he moved, what techniques he knew and what obvious areas needed work. He had good footwork but, like most of us, needed to improve his head movement. We used the following games/sparring rounds (3 minutes):
One-for-one called shoulder tag
Freestyle shoulder tag
Avoid the jab/tag the chest (trains proactive slipping)
Avoid the jab/tag the chest/tag the back of the shoulder (layers on effective angling/positioning)
Body shot sparring - straight punches only
Body shot sparring - layering on hooks
Body shot sparring - layering on upper-cuts
We then had 3 minutes on the focus mitts and belly pad, pairing up head shots with the body.
The lesson finished with some static stretching to warm down.
