Tonight's 1.5 hour lesson looked at building an effective defence in Muay Thai. We went back through the basic three punches - jab, cross and left hook - as well as the rear and switch round kicks and tested defences throughout. Although the basic Thai jab is akin to a boxer's step-jab it differs in that weight over the lead leg must be minimised. This is due to the danger from leg kicks. We drilled defending elbows and leg kicks to the lead and rear legs, using a cover and shin-checks. The same procedure was repeated with the cross. When it came to the left hook, we worked not to fall into a bladed stance and fall foul of the leg kicks again. We also covered better teep defence and footwork appropriate to Muay Thai's range compared to Boxing.
The lesson finished with 5 x 3 minutes sparring.
