"Discovering" the uppercut

Hour seven of my teenage client's Boxing course brought us onto uppercuts. I try not just technically teach techniques so that clients learn them in a passive fashion, rather I like to create opportunities where they will use them. Then, afterwards, we look at refining them. That was thinking behind Thursday night's lesson as you can see in the following 3-minute rounds:

  1. Cornering the ring and stiff-arming

  2. Pawing jab and cornering vs defence only

  3. Lead hand vs defence only - find or create an opening in the guard

  4. Focus mitts - double jab/straight right/left uppercut

  5. Ditto

  6. Try to land the uppercut vs jab/cross

  7. Shift angle step vs the jabbing machine

  8. Shift angle step/same hand uppercut/hook vs jab/cross

  9. Ditto

  10. Focus mitts - as the previous two sparring rounds
