Fight engagement

My 1.5 hour client felt he lacked engagement in his stand-up fighting. Last lesson we trained Muay Thai, but he wanted to explore this topic in Boxing. We used the following routine to better encourage moving into fight range.

Warm-up: muscle activation, dynamic stretching and 3 x 1 minute heavy bag work

10 x 3-minute sparring rounds:

  1. One-for-one at medium/close range (encouraging immediate responses)

  2. Inside vs outside (outside fighter is permitted to escape to a safe zone)

  3. Ditto

  4. "Against the ropes" (one fighter is not permitted to move their back heel away)

  5. Attack vs counter-attack

  6. Ditto

  7. Front foot vs back-foot (aggressive vs defensive fighter)

  8. Ditto

  9. Two-for-two at medium/close range (maintaining engagement/overlapping counters)

  10. Free sparring

Finisher: 16 minute high intensity heavy bag work out - alternating bursts of speed and power

Warm-down: PNF and static stretching
