The tenth and final hour of my client's current course on Submission Grappling kept us in half-guard. After our warm-up we went through some overall basics on half-guard strategies. We looked at traditional half-guard with the underhook, attacking the back and sweep from dog-fight position, the knee-shield and Z-guard positions mainly framing to sweep or attacking the legs, and finally deep half-guard, the lockdown setting up the electric chair sweeps and submissions.
My client requested that we look at submissions specifically from this position. I began and focused the entire lesson on the most basic: the kimura. We broke down basic set-ups for this hold through games in the following 5-minute rounds:
Establish wrist grip and pull the radial bone across the chest
Begin from this grip and position, and try to overhook to grip own wrist
Begin from the previous finish position and complete submission
