The final hour of my client's second Muay Thai course focused on a review of the material covered. We then settled on working on better impact development for both the rear round kick and the switch-kick. Once the mechanical side was settled and I used the Ali shuffle to better improve the switch kick it came down to more of a mental release. Geoff Thompson once told me that I was holding back on my punches and it was more of a psychological obstacle I needed to clear. Now I work more on mental detachment after everything else is lined up. Indeed, there is so much psychological baggage we can bring to a training session that creates inhibitors in our performance. I am not a fan of summoning up aggression or even in the idea of cathartic release when it comes to manufacturing better impact. Rather I believe in throwing a mental switch where you just think about penetrating the target.
The session finished with 3 x 3 minute rounds of sparring.
