Range finding

12.06.2025

Hour four of my teenage client's course focused on the jab. Jabbing will prove to be a regular feature of several of Boxing clients next week. After footwork, head movement and defence layers are in place, attention should be brought to the most important punch in a boxer's arsenal. Up to this point the jab was taught as a support tool, an obvious technique to better demonstrate the reason behind good slipping, ducking, blocking, parrying etc. Now we began to explore its full potential.

Training took the form of counter-punching games, focus mitt work and a lot of heavy bag work. We covered the basic jab, the step-jab and the double jab whilst harmonising all of them with the forward previously taught. My client learnt how to use the jab to transition from edge of range to long range and then to circle out of range. We also used the flicker jab in conjunction with back-peddling to provide cover fire when moving to the inside.
