Mixed Martial Arts Personal Training
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) demands mastery over multiple fighting ranges, each with its own techniques and strategies. In my client’s fifth lesson of his Mixed Martial Arts personal training course, we focused on breaking down these ranges into seven distinct sparring rounds. This approach allowed us to isolate and sharpen specific skills, building a solid foundation for effective MMA performance. After seven years of training together, his lessons now last 1.5 hours, forming a 10-lesson course totaling 15 hours. This report shares the structure, challenges, and key takeaways from this intensive session.

Breaking Down the Seven Sparring Rounds
To develop a well-rounded MMA fighter, it’s crucial to understand and control the different ranges of combat. We divided the lesson into seven rounds, each emphasizing a specific range or combination of techniques.
Round One: Boxing with MMA Gloves
The first round focused purely on boxing techniques using MMA gloves. This meant working on punches, footwork, head movement, and defensive maneuvers without kicks or grappling. The smaller MMA gloves compared to boxing gloves require tighter defense and quicker hand speed.
Key focus areas:
Maintaining proper guard with smaller gloves
Effective jab and cross combinations
Head movement to avoid strikes
Foot positioning for balance and angles
This round warmed up the client’s striking fundamentals and set the tone for the session.
Round Two: Kickboxing with MMA Gloves
Next, we added kicks to the boxing base, transitioning into kickboxing. This round introduced leg kicks, body kicks, and basic defensive checks while maintaining the boxing elements.
Challenges encountered:
Timing kicks with punches
Checking leg kicks effectively
Maintaining balance after throwing kicks
We paused after the round to review techniques for checking kicks and counterattacking, emphasizing smooth transitions between punches and kicks.
Round Three: Shoot Boxing (Boxing with Clinching and Takedowns)
Shoot boxing blends striking with clinching and takedown attempts. This round allowed clinch entries and takedown attempts while maintaining boxing strikes.
Techniques practiced:
Entering the clinch from striking range
Using punches to set up takedowns
Defending takedowns while striking
The client worked on controlling the clinch and timing takedown attempts without losing striking effectiveness.
Round Four: Shoot Kickboxing (Kickboxing with Clinching and Takedowns)
Building on the previous round, we added kicks to the clinch and takedown mix. This round required the client to manage a more complex range, blending kicks, clinch control, and takedown setups.
Focus points:
Using kicks to create openings for clinch entries
Combining knee strikes in the clinch with takedown attempts
Defending against counters while transitioning between ranges
This round highlighted the importance of fluid movement between striking and grappling.
Round Five: MMA Clinch
In this round, all sparring in the clinch range was permitted, including punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes, kicks, and takedowns. This full clinch range sparring tested the client’s ability to control and attack in close quarters.
Key lessons:
Effective use of elbows and knees in the clinch
Maintaining balance while delivering strikes and defending takedowns
Using foot positioning to control opponent’s movement
The client showed improved confidence in mixing strikes with takedown attempts in the clinch.
Round Six: Ground 'n Pound from Top Position
This round focused on ground striking with one person in the top position and the other defending from guard. The client practiced delivering strikes while maintaining control and the defender worked on guard retention and defense.
Techniques emphasized:
Maintaining posture and base on top
Delivering effective ground strikes without losing position
Using guard to control and defend strikes
This round reinforced the importance of positional control during ground striking.
Round Seven: Ground 'n Pound with Roles Reversed
The final round reversed the roles from the previous round, allowing the client to experience both attacking and defending positions on the ground. This helped develop empathy for the opponent’s perspective and improve defensive strategies.
Takeaways:
Understanding the challenges of defending ground strikes
Practicing escapes and sweeps from guard
Maintaining composure under pressure
This round rounded out the lesson by reinforcing ground game fundamentals.
Technique Review and Problem Solving Between Rounds
Between each sparring round, we took time to review techniques and address problems encountered during sparring. This included:
Breaking down specific movements that caused difficulty
Drilling counters and defensive tactics
Adjusting timing and distance management
This approach ensured the client could immediately apply corrections and deepen understanding.
Finishing with PNF Stretching and Mobility Exercises
The lesson concluded with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching and mobility exercises. These helped improve flexibility, reduce injury risk, and enhance recovery after intense sparring.
Benefits of PNF stretching:
Increased range of motion
Improved muscle relaxation
Enhanced joint mobility
Incorporating mobility work is essential for long-term MMA training success.
Final Thoughts on Mastering MMA Ranges
This fifth lesson demonstrated the value of breaking down MMA into specific ranges and focusing on each in isolation before blending them. The client’s progress after seven years of training is evident in his ability to adapt and apply techniques across striking, clinching, and ground fighting.
For anyone serious about MMA, dedicating time to mastering each range separately builds a strong foundation for effective, fluid fighting. Sparring rounds that isolate skills reveal weaknesses and allow targeted improvement. Combining this with technical review and mobility work creates a balanced training approach.
