My senior client is currently on the third lesson of his newest course. This marks his third consecutive day of lessons. Due to the appointment-based nature of my lessons, I can be flexible and adjust to different scheduling needs. For instance, he took a two-week break from training and will need another week off, so he decided to schedule three consecutive sessions: at 5pm on Wednesday, 4pm yesterday, and 2pm today. This afternoon's class focused on isolating footwork training, specifically the shift step.
Training was broken up into four phases.
Introduction to the footwork
He shifted from the outside and to the inside as moved forward only. I then layered on consistent jabbing so he could slip and roll under into the shift step.
Specific sparring
We pitted my jab against his switch-step to the outside for a round then I put my cross against his switch-step to the inside before pitting all straight punches against either of these movements and, finally, a free-sparring round where he integrated these movements into his overall repertoire. His main techniques consisted of uppercuts and hooks off the same hand.
Focus mitts
With sparring in mind, he could now unload these techniques with more power on the focus where I could better refine them.
Heavy bag
The lesson finished with a session on the heavy bag, where my client was given full autonomy to practise the shift step at full power.
