Shuffles, Ladders and Step-Kicks (diary entry)

Saturday's father and son client team continued with our work on Muay Thai basics. The lesson was mainly focused on the son as we covered using the pivot-step and developing his switch kick. For the former we used the teep to set up a blindside cross punch or low round kick. The teep is a great tool for creating distance and to allow for repositioning. For the latter we dissected the round kick's mechanics. I working hard with everyone to ensure we get a full pivot on this kick in addition to other technical areas. The ladder is a great way to teach this action. Here the fighter puts one foot inside the rungs and stands in a normal staggered stance. They then simply step with their rear leg through 90 degrees so they are side on, the position they will be in when throwing the kick, and then step back before stepping forward with the lead leg over the next rung and repeat. The exercise can then be built up to develop the kick and cadences can be varied, as they were with my client on last Friday. In essence, we are training to kick through the target and then immediately re-set.
