The Grappling Angle Cont. (diary entry)

21.02.2023

Tuesday morning continued with the expansive grappling version on the angling/circling footwork pattern with Athena School of Karate. The full combination and its tangent combinations are covered in this blog post.  Today we focused on transitioning from a failed single leg to second tangent combination and also completing the full combination.

Lesson Takeaways:

  • The individual coaching the combination (holding the mitts) needs to properly block the single leg takedown attempt. Only by doing this can the fighter shooting use the pushing action of the block to generate upward momentum in their uppercut that will go up between the opponent's arms (as pictured). When holding the focus mitts the coach needs to push with both hands and then move quickly to a holding position.

  • After throwing three jabs whilst circling to the power side of the opponent the fighter needs chain an impactful double leg takedown. I often train the jab to shoot combination after teaching jab to the head/jab to the body combination because the dip is similar (the shoot is much lower and closer).

  • When landing in the opponent's guard after this second tangent, the ground 'n pound combination should include hammer-fist to clear the cover followed by an overhand punch.

  • In the full combination, the double-leg is blocked with a shallow sprawl and then the fighter sprawls as the opponent goes for their own double-leg. Here it is important to sprawl and circle away.
