technical boxing sparring workout

22.04.2024 My couple clients continued with work on improving aspects of their individual style with a two-hour session (cover hours three and four). One client began with improvements on his overall movement but since the previous lesson we have begun to work more on tightening up his defence against counter attacks. The other client began with handling out-boxers better but has since evolved into improving their head movement. After our usual warm-up of muscle activation and dynamic stretching exercises we sparred for 3 x 2 minute rounds of one-for-one restricted space punching. This is such a good exercise for waking up the reactions, identifying openings and fighting in the pocket. We spoke a bit about negative fighting and prolonged periods of hand-fighting. Everything should be geared towards proactive and purposeful fighting. In each of these sections there was no taking turns. The client stayed on to fight a different opponent playing the same roll. Timed Attacks Here we focused on the client who needs to handle counter attacks better through 2-minute rounds:

  1. Client initiates the attack by stepping over the line and has to deliver their strikes before retreating over a back line without getting hit.

  2. Ditto

  3. General attack versus counter-attack sparring

  4. Ditto

Aggressive Defence In this section we adopted a type of peek-a-boo boxing style to better accommodate my client. A big part of this was using regular head movement when moving into range. The shifting stance switch on an angle was covered but not emphasised. My main concern was getting her to adopt the regular slipping action on the approach to bait and feint whilst throwing punches to gaps provided by the opponent's strikes. Again, the client concerned didn't switch roles just opponents. This was covered this in the following 2-minute rounds:

  1. Head movement aggressive counter attacks versus defence only (encouraging proactive head movement)

  2. Ditto

  3. Head movement aggressive counter attacks versus

  4. Ditto
