General Lesson
We warmed up using agility drills – focusing on footwork and some transitional postures – and then some partner drills. All the students drilled blitzing, switch-kicking and takedown entries followed by takedowns. We then resumed our ground work, beginning with escapes to guard. From guard we worked the oma plata position, first as a sweep and then as a submission. The class finished with a couple of rounds of MMA sparring and then a stretching warm-down.
Private Lesson
All combinations had tentative links to each other. We began by working the punch/kick/kick/punch combination with counters. This led us to focus on the fundamental body mechanics covered in my previous private lesson diary entry. We then drilled the clinch and knee combination, breaking it down into neck-tie, plumb and straight knee. It is important to drill the two grips separately, as if you were throwing a jab/cross combination. Trying to go for the plumb position with both hands at the same time leaves you open to attack. We then drilled an overarm breakaway into a side clinch (one hand on the back of the head and the other on the inside of the arm). This then moved into a clinch with the arm-trap, leading nicely into an arm triangle and take-down into a submission. We then looked at an immediate counter on the ground into guard and then to the oma plata shoulder lock.
To finish off the student performed 30 reps of each of these movements:
Punch/kick combination
Clinch knee
Arm triangle take-down
