We continued the kosoto gari (small outer reap) theme. This progressed onto a set-up for a single leg takedown. The kosoto gari relied on the opponent pushing back from an initial push, throwing their weight onto a leg, which was then swept. We looked at another set-up, where a pulling action prompting a pulling back reaction set the opponent up for lowline takedown. This was the arm-drag set-up into a double-leg takedown. We concluded with a few rounds of takedown sparring and then a couple of rounds of MMA.

Grading

The small grading yielded positive results with low and medium ranks attending. I was happy with the level of effort shown by all, but certain areas clearly need addressing. Echoing yesterday’s concerns, one student seemed to be sacrificing self-defence and even personal security information for development in attribute training. My regular junior classes are largely MMA-based, but the foundation for my grading criteria has always been in self-protection. A CCMA student should have a solid background in personal security and self-defence before he goes on to explore the benefits of cross-training. These concerns will be addressed in future classes.
