General Lesson

We looked at the twisting action required for many core circular techniques in martial arts. This began with hooks from boxing, striking high and low. Then we brought in bobbing and weaving to further emphasis the torqueing motion required to hook. Training was next taken the ground, where we covered the arm-bar from guard. Here it is crucial that the hips are turned to complete the action. Going to the clinch we ran through the hip throw. Then we went back to stand-up fighting and round kicks. The technical side of the lesson was then finished with a return to self-defence and the offline rear hand strike.

The lesson finished with a Strategy One versus Strategy Two pressure test for self-defence and MMAsparring.

Private Lesson

After a 15 minute non-stop sparring battle, my client showed good signs of retaining the information he had been training over the past two months. He also showed a lot of temerity and fortitude. We continued with the general lesson’s theme and focused on pivoting the feet and twisting at the waist for hooks and kicks. In addition to pad-work, we did a series of strikes with a stick to the pads to get the correct twisting motion. The lesson was finished with some balancing exercises for kicks to strengthen stabilizing muscles in the core.

Some examples of a no-gi ogoshi hip throw, as taught in today's lesson:
