This report outlines the details of a 1.5-hour Muay Thai personal training class conducted for a long-term client who has been training with me since 2014. The client has completed all my courses, including boxing and MMA, and has focused on Muay Thai for the past year.

Muay Thai Personal Training Class Overview

Tonight's session included the following blocks:

Block 1: Long-Range Perimeter Management

Focus: Mastering the outer line with teeps and evasion.

  • Round 1: Fighter A can score only with teeps (push kicks) and long evasions. Fighter B scores with roundhouse kicks to the body and legs.

  • Rest 1: Box Breathing. 4-second inhale, 4-second hold, 4-second exhale, 4-second hold. Focus on expanding the belly, not the chest.

  • Round 2: Swap roles. Fighter B uses teeps only. Fighter A uses roundhouse kicks only.

  • Rest 2: Box Breathing. Maintain the 4-4-4-4 rhythm to intentionally lower the heart rate before the next block.

Block 2: Penetrating the Long-Range Shield

Focus: Developing safe entry mechanics against an outside fighter.

  • Round 3: Fighter A acts as the "Sniper" on the outside using long kicks and jabs. Fighter B must cross the gap, step through the strikes, and land a single medium-range punch before resetting.

  • Rest 3: Extended Exhale. Inhale for 3 seconds, exhale slowly through pursed lips for 6 seconds. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • Round 4: Swap roles. Fighter B becomes the Sniper. Fighter A must cross the gap and score.

  • Rest 4: Extended Exhale. 3-second inhale, 6-second slow exhale.

Block 3: Pocket Boxing & Deflection

Focus: Upper body movement and countering inside punch range.

  • Round 5: Fighter A is restricted to punching only. Fighter B cannot strike back; they must strictly use defense (blocking, parrying, slipping, ducking) to stay in the pocket.

  • Rest 5: Nasal Recovery. Inhale deeply through the nose for 4 seconds, exhale through the nose for 4 seconds. Keep the mouth closed entirely.

  • Round 6: Swap roles. Fighter B punches only. Fighter A works strictly on head movement and defensive positioning.

  • Rest 6: Nasal Recovery. 4-second inhale, 4-second exhale through the nose.

Block 4: Crashing the Medium-Range Pocket

Focus: Forcing the transition from boxing distance into the clinch.

  • Round 7: Fighter A throws free punch-kick combinations. Fighter B must weather the storm, use forearms to smother space, and tie up Fighter A's arms. Safety Rule: No knees to the head allowed.

  • Rest 7: Box Breathing. Reset to the 4-4-4-4 rhythm. Control the adrenaline spike from the high-volume pressure.

  • Round 8: Swap roles. Fighter B throws combinations. Fighter A smothers and ties up. Safety Rule: No knees to the head.

  • Rest 8: Box Breathing. 4-4-4-4 rhythm.

Block 5: Clinch Dominance & Grips

Focus: Securing inside positioning and posture control.

  • Round 9: Fighter A hunts for the double-collar tie (plum). Fighter B focuses on bicep control, swimming arms inside, and breaking posture. Safety Rule: Knees to the body/legs only; head is completely off-limits.

  • Rest 9: Extended Exhale. 3-second inhale, 6-second exhale. Clear out the carbon dioxide build-up from heavy clinching.

  • Round 10: Swap roles. Fighter B hunts plum. Fighter A works inside control. Safety Rule: Knees to body/legs only.

  • Rest 10: Extended Exhale. 3-second inhale, 6-second exhale.

Block 6: Dynamic Range Blending

Focus: Forcing tactical adaptability mid-fight.

  • Round 11: Fighter A is the "Conductor" and verbally calls out the range (e.g., "Long!", "Pocket!", "Clinch!"). Fighter B must immediately adapt. Safety Rule: If clinch is called, no knees to the head.

  • Rest 11: Nasal Recovery. Slow, deep nasal-only breathing to prepare for the final round.

  • Round 12: Swap roles. Fighter B becomes the Conductor. Fighter A must dynamically adapt. Safety Rule: No knees to the head in the clinch.

  • Rest 12: Cool Down. Deep, un-paced belly breathing until the heart rate returns to a resting baseline.

Additional Exercises

The lesson also included a posterior chain superset consisting of 100 pull-ups and 100 Nordic curl variations (10 x pull-up variation paired with 10 x Nordic curl variation, resting only when the partner has their turn) and a PNF stretching warm-down.
