Constraints Led Karate Sparring for Elbow Strikes and Grip Fighting (Martial Arts Cross-Training)
Over the last two blocks of 10 lessons, we narrowed the focus to elbow strikes. We covered the main elbow methods found in Muay Thai, then used mixed martial arts training ideas to test them against movement, clinch pressure, grips, and resistance.
Then we came back to karate.
More specifically, we came back to naihanchi.

12 Round Teep Sparring Blueprint for Muay Thai Control
A good teep is not just a kick. It is a brake, a range finder, a balance check, and a reset button.
Today’s private lesson was built around that idea. The client has trained with me since 2014, so the class could move past basic pad rounds and into controlled sparring problems. The aim was simple: make the teep work when the other person is trying to stop it.

Submission Grappling Lesson Eight Pins, Back Mount and Rear Naked Choke
Lesson eight showed clear progress. The client’s top control is becoming smoother. His transitions between pins are less forced. His escapes are also improving because he is starting to recognise pressure, frames, and timing earlier.
That matters. In grappling, control comes before submission. A choke or lock is hard to apply if the position is loose. This session kept that order: hold the position, move between pins, isolate the back, then attack the choke.

The son is preparing for an upcoming grading, with a focus on ground-fighting. The previous lesson explored attacking and defending from the position. This session shifted more clearly towards defence, especially the hip escape onto the back and the transition into an arm bar.

Martial Arts Cross-Training Games for Mastering Horizontal Elbows and Hidden Hand Entries
My client from Cotswold Karate School has been taking several months of Muay Thai cross-training lessons. The aim has not been to replace karate with kickboxing. The aim has been to use kickboxing and Muay Thai as attribute training, so certain ideas already present in karate can become more alive under pressure.

Enhancing Boxing Skills Through Dynamic Drills and Creative Sparring Techniques (Martial Arts Cross-Training)
Boxing is often seen as a straightforward sport of punches and footwork, but mastering it requires more than just memorizing combinations. In my recent lesson with my teenage competitive taekwondo client, I focused on building foundational skills through dynamic drills and encouraging creative thinking during sparring. This approach not only sharpens technique but also develops adaptability, which is crucial for anyone interested in martial arts cross training.
