Muay Thai Clinch Sparring Workout - Constraint-Led Approach Games for Better Inside Control
Muay Thai Personal Training

Tonight my veteran client focused on some traditional muay Thai clinch work sparring followed by two rounds of full muay Thai rules sparring.
Game 1: The Posture & Frame Battle (Rounds 1–2)
Theme: Establishing vs. denying the dominant collar tie.
Starting Position: Mutual neutral tie (one hand on the neck, one hand on the bicep).
Constraint: Both hands stay glued to the collarbone. No locking hands behind the head.
Permitted Techniques: Straight framing, bicep control, hip standardisation, and soft straight knees to the midsection. No sweeps or elbows.
Round 1 Roles:
Fighter A Goal: Maintain upright posture and prevent your head from being pulled down.
Fighter B Goal: Bypass the collarbone frames to force a clean double-collar tie.
Round 2 Roles: Switch roles. Fighter B now defends posture while Fighter A tries to break it.
Game 2: The Inside Steering & Leverage Game (Rounds 3–4)
Theme: Single-arm dominance, off-balancing, and circling out.
Starting Position: Collar-and-elbow grip (one fighter has a deep neck grip, the other controls the elbow).
Constraint: Only one hand is allowed on the neck at a time. The free hand must stay active on the bicep/shoulder. No double-collar ties.
Permitted Techniques: Single-hand neck steering, bicep blocks, side knees, and foot-to-foot off-balancing.
Round 1 Roles:
Fighter A Goal: Pull your partner off-balance at least three times using single-handed steering and weight transitions.
Fighter B Goal: Pin your partner's free arm and look to circle out of the grip entirely.
Round 2 Roles: Switch roles. Fighter B takes the steering/off-balancing objective, and Fighter A works to pin and escape.
Game 3: The Unarmed Striking Entry (Rounds 5–6)
Theme: Landing clean impact before connecting hands.
Starting Position: Outside arm's length (long guard distance, fully disengaged).
Constraint: Every entry into the clinch must be preceded by a single clean knee or teep. No naked grabs.
Permitted Techniques: Long-range teeps, single entry straight knees, long guard frames, and standard collar ties once inside.
Round 1 Roles:
Fighter A Goal: Successfully land five clean entry strikes before your hands touch your partner's neck.
Fighter B Goal: Parry or catch the entry strike to counter-clinch while your partner is on one leg.
Round 2 Roles: Switch roles. Fighter B initiates with the entry strikes while Fighter A hunts for the parry/catch counter.
Game 4: The Recovery & Escape Drill (Rounds 7–8)
Theme: Surviving disadvantage and stripping a locked grip.
Starting Position: Partner starts with a locked double-collar tie (full inside control on your neck).
Constraint: The defending fighter cannot attack. The attacking fighter controls the pace.
Permitted Techniques: Hands-to-face framing, swimming the arms inside, and hip-ins. No striking, sweeps, or counter-gripping until the break is achieved.
Round 1 Roles:
Fighter A (Defender): Break the double-collar tie and return to a neutral position within 10 seconds of each reset.
Fighter B (Attacker): Keep the posture completely broken and disrupt hip alignment using the locked grip.
Round 2 Roles: Switch roles. Fighter B goes into the deficit to fight out, and Fighter A applies the dominant tie.
Game 5: Dead-Weight Sinking & Fatigue (Rounds 9–10)
Theme: Managing high exhaustion through structural weight placement.
Starting Position: Over-under grip (one arm over, one arm under).
Constraint: Pace is lowered by 50%. Focus strictly on heavy elbows tucked, posture, and leaning weight. No explosive sweeps or rapid knee flurries.
Permitted Techniques: Heavy dead-weight leaning, forehead-to-collarbone positioning, and short grinding forearm frames.
Round 1 Roles:
Fighter A Goal: Make your partner carry your entire upper body weight, forcing them to burn out their lower back and legs.
Fighter B Goal: Keep hips back and posture completely vertical to avoid absorbing the dead weight.
Round 2 Roles: Switch roles. Fighter B applies the weight sink, and Fighter A fights to keep their hips back and structure upright.
Rounds 11-12 - Full sparring
We then finished with our 100 pull-ups/100 Nordic curls giant set followed by PNF stretching and mobility work.
